PROGRAMME / COURSE 

1. What are the entry requirements according for each specific Pre-U programme?

The 3 minimum requirements that a student is required to meet before being eligible to enroll in the programme is:

  1. SPM Math/Science: MQA requirement of obtaining credit in one Science/Mathematic subjects at SPM/O-levels
  2. Pre-University: Meeting an entry requirement of pre-university which corresponds to the required minimum requirements (e.g. A-Level is a minimum of 1C, 1D or UEC which is 5B’s, STPM is a minimum of 2C’s, etc.)
  3. English language: A for SPM English OR any other equivalent English requirements that corresponds to the required minimum requirements.
2. How many subjects are offered in this programme?

Our programme requires students to undertake 33 subjects in total, which are divided as below:

  • MPU: 5 Subjects
  • Core: 19 Subjects
  • Electives: 7 Subjects
  • Inclusive of Industrial Training Course and Undergraduate Thesis Course
3. What electives are available at HELP?

Electives are not optional courses but an opportunity to specialize/explore a certain psychology area that you might be interested in. The department offers more than 20 electives from various Psychology fields which ranges from Educational, Special Needs, Counselling, Creative Therapy and etc. Students can choose to take 2 electives in their year 2 and another 5 electives in their year 3.

4. Is the programme exam-based or coursework based?

For all courses offered within our programme, the structure will be split into 40:60/60:40 coursework and written examinations, depending on the course registered.

5. What is the attendance requirement for students?

Students are encouraged to attend all their lectures and tutorials as it consists of important facts that will be relevant for students’ future academic performance. Specifically, for international students, they are required to attend at least 80% of their classes at all times, determined by the Malaysian Immigration Department.

6. What should be done if students could not attend classes due to health issues/sickness?

Replacement classes or submissions are subjected to lecturers.

7. Who should consider studying Psychology?

Psychology allows its students to understand human behaviour and mental processes and it allows you to better understand how people think, act and feel. Therefore, students who wish to have a further understanding of the human condition and people who prefer frequent interactions with others should consider this course.

8. Are there opportunities where students can present in a conference or be involved in a research?

Students studying in HELP would be given a chance to attend psychology research colloquiums that are held thrice a year. Students are given a chance to present their research to their peers and faculty staff. It reflects our commitment to train students in how to design, implement, analyze, and report research in psychology. The Academic Research Training Program is a mentorship program open to HELP Psychology students who are interested in the areas of research and consulting. Every semester, Department of Psychology academic staff will make a number of projects available, which students can apply for. HELP also provides an internship course where students are able to prepare themselves before applying for internships. Students also get a chance to present and attend the International Conference of Psychology (ICP) held every 4 years (students can present, subject their abstract is accepted).

9. What are the additional opportunities that are offered in our programme?Here goes your title

In our programme, students are eligible for yearly membership with PSIMA (membership at your own cost). In addition, we also offer industrial training with on-the-spot job interviews on campus. Key industry and guest speakers for career modules and in-house seminars – world renowned psychologist/industry experts.

10. Why are mathematics and science subjects an important part of the programme?

Having credits for mathematics and science subjects is a standard entry requirement from the Ministry of Education which needs to be followed by each university. Throughout the course, mathematics will play an important role in some of the subjects (e.g. research method, quantitative method, etc.) whereas a basic science knowledge will help students to better understand the science-based subjects (e.g. biopsychology, cognitive psychology, etc.).

11. Is the Psych Programme offered in both campuses?

The Psych Programme is only offered in the Subang 2 Campus.

12. Who do I speak to regarding options for credit transfer to overseas universities?

At HELP, we have a dedicated department, Student Placement Centre, who oversees and advises students on their credit transfer option. You will be counselled on entry requirements, fees and other logistic matters by our staff.

ENROLMENT, REGISTRATION, FEES AND PAYMENT/BILLING
 
1. How do you know which subject to enrol for each semester?

Once you are a student of our programme, you would be able to access HELP University’s e-learning website called LMS. Every semester, the Psychology Department’s LMS page will release instructions on course enrolment that will help guide students register needed subjects according to your intake.

2. How do students register for subjects?

As a student of our programme, you will hold an account on our education management system, called NewMyPride. This account will serve as the online medium for students to “Add/Drop Subjects” at specific timings. Should you face difficulties registering online, students may obtain a form for over-the-counter registration to be submitted to our Registry department.

3. How can students pay their tuition fees?

Students will be briefed on different options of payment during orientation by the registry department. For HELP students, you can check on NewMyPride for outstanding fees and you can make the payment following the options below:

  • Most Preferred: Online Payment with Online Banking or via JomPAY
  • Cash Transfers via Cash/Cheque Deposit Machines
  • Direct Currency Exchange via Telegraphic Transfers
  • Over-The-Counter Payment at our Bursary Department

Students will be briefed on different options of payment during orientation by the Registry department. Students are expected to pay within the first two weeks of orientation date (for long semesters) or within the first week (for short semester). Fees are paid semesterly, subjected to the number of subjects taken and resits (if any).

SUPPORT

Academic support (Scholarships, other opportunities)

1. What scholarships are available at HELP?

International and outstation students can approach our hostel provider, Hostel Pro. Hostel Pro is the largest accommodation provider for our university which has assisted about 1000 students to get their ideal accommodation. Students’ needs and security issues are well taken care by the hostel site officers.

2. What facilities are available for students to use?

3. Additional Services Available

All psychology students will be given access to use lecture halls, tutorial rooms, for their assignments and research (upon availability). For bookings, students may approach the department. For other common areas (student lounge/open foyer), students can approach the Department of Student Affairs (DSA)

4. What clubs are available and how to join?

A list of clubs and societies available are listed at our HELP University’s official website. You can sign up during HELP Joint Clubs and Societies Day (JCSD), which will be held every semester.

FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
 
1. How much is the living expenses in Malaysia?

Below is a student’s typical monthly expenditure:

  • Accommodation: RM800 – RM1,000
  • Food: RM400 – RM700
  • Others: RM500 – RM700
  • Total: RM1,700 – RM2,400

This would only be an estimation, and values may differ depending on lifestyle. Tuition fees can vary according to course; please refer to your offer letter for fee structure.

2. Is there any specific department I could go to if I have any questions?

If you have any further issues that remain unanswered, you may contact our International Student Services Department (ISSD). This department will assist you in handling all matters included application, immigration requirement, visas, accommodation and etc.

OTHER MATTERS
1. How does HELP maintain the standard and quality of the programme?

By continuously benchmarking programs against international standards such as HELP-Flinders Joint Degree programme which ensures the quality of the programme is on par with what is taught in Australia by getting the approval from Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). In addition, the Department of Psychology has an external academic moderator which provides feedback every year on the curriculum for the programme. Another way the programme standard is maintained is by having an industry benchmarking which helps the department understand what are the current needs in the market to develop the needed skill-sets which psychology students need. The Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) also ensures that the programme is always in-line with their requirements. Not to forget, student’s feedback also helps ensure the quality of the programme is maintained.
