The Asian Journal of Behavioural Sciences (AJBS) is a biannual academic journal that publishes high-quality peer-reviewed articles on studies of human behaviour, contextualized within the Asian and Asia-Pacific region. The journal publishes work primarily from the psychological sciences and welcomes original work from authors around the world that feature: (i) findings from quantitative or qualitative research derived from Asian samples (ii) highlights how contextual and cultural factors within the Asian region shape behaviour and (iii) refinements of theories, models or measures developed in non-Asian contexts. In short, AJBS strives to publish work that contributes to the scientific literature by featuring how human psychological processes – cognition, emotion, and behaviours, are influenced and shaped within an Asian context.
AJBS welcomes traditional empirical papers employing rigorous quantitative and/or qualitative methods, as well as conceptual and theoretical papers. Regardless of the type of paper, submissions should contribute to the understanding of behavioural processes, models, and/or processes within an Asian context.
AJBS subscribes to the view that human cognition, affect, and behaviour is regulated by socially-constructed meanings. The journal adopts a cultural psychology (not to be confused with cross-cultural psychology) view, in that all psychological processes are domain-specific and shaped by how individuals, teams, and groups create and convey meaning in their cultural contexts. To this end, AJBS seeks to address imbalances and narrow understandings of psychological processes given the field’s reliance on WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) samples. The journal, however, welcomes cross-cultural studies that compare psychological processes between Asian and non-Asian samples. Submissions featuring indigenous populations, employ methods and measures suited for understanding and capturing culture-specific psychological phenomena, and those that assist in refining established psychological theories are particularly encouraged.
AJBS publishes laboratory-based experimental studies, empirical research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and studies employing other rigorous methodologies. The journal also welcomes well-conducted replication studies as well as papers reporting null findings.
APA Style: AJBS requires all submissions to be formatted following the 7th edition APA formatting convention. All submissions must be in English.
Word Length: Manuscripts should be no more than 6,000 words (all in, including tables, appendices, and references). We understand that word limits can sometimes be restrictive and hence allow for submissions of online appendices that can aid reviewers in better understanding the context featured in the manuscript. No identifying information should be presented in the submitted manuscript; identifying information about authorship should only be presented on the corresponding cover letter.
Manuscript Structure: Please organize manuscripts according to the following sections:
Please submit online appendices as separate files. There is no word limit to these online appendices, though all main content and sections listed above must not exceed 6,000 words. Manuscripts may include sub-sections under each of the main sections listed above. If using sub-sections, please organize your manuscript so that the flow and organization of the content are as clear and logical as possible. For instance, you may choose to include a sub-section titled, “Hypothesis Tests” under the Results section and “Summary of Findings” under the Discussion section. Note that these are merely suggestions. Please see the template for the formatting guidelines for your submission.
We encourage authors to refer to the following guidelines:
Submission Process: All submissions should be made via ajbs@help.edu.my
Review Process: AJBS adopts a double-blind review policy. Please ensure that any information which may reveal the author’s identity is blinded in your submission. All submissions will first be assessed by the Editor-in-Chief for their suitability and whether they meet the scope of the journal. Submissions will then be assigned to two peer reviewers. The expected time from the initial submission to the first response is 90 days.
Acknowledgments and Funding: Please acknowledge (if any) funding received for the current work, which may include grants and their granting institutions/agencies. This section can also be used to acknowledge reviewers for comments on previous versions of the manuscript. Please see the template for a sample acknowledgments and funding statement.
Statement of Ethical Clearance: All submissions presenting data (i.e. empirical papers) must include a statement acknowledging that the study was conducted adhering to institutionally-approved ethical clearance. Where possible, an approval number is required with the submission.
Data Availability Statement: AJBS strongly encourages the submission of data employed in studies along with all article submissions following the Open Science Framework/Open Science Policy. The journal and its editorial board members are committed to ensuring transparency and ethical practices in the sharing and communication of scientific work, with the ultimate aim of increasing the reproducibility of findings from the behavioural sciences. Please see the template for a sample of data availability.
Declaration of Originality: All submissions to AJBS must include a declaration of originality, confirming that the work has not been published prior or is at the time of submission, being reviewed in another outlet. Please see the template for a sample declaration of originality statement.
Publication Fee: There is no publication fee for the AJBS. Accepted submissions will be published online.
